Comfort Appetizers
With endless holiday get-togethers and parties coming up, I thought it would be nice to do a little blog on some "Comfort Appetizers". I cannot tell you how many times I have offered or someone has asked me to bring an appetizer or finger food dish to a gathering...and I have no clue what in the world to bring. I usually hit up Pinterest and nine times out of ten, I make something FAR too complicated that takes awhile AND I spend double, if not triple, of what everyone else spent on food. BUT, I thought it would be good to share here, what my favorite go to’s are, when it comes to bringing a sharable dish.
Cocktail Pizza
- Rye Cocktail Loaf
- pizza sauce
- sausage
- cheese shredded
- fresh mozzarella
- veggies
Preheat oven to 450˚. Because I’m a pizza fanatic this is one of my favorite recipes and people actually go crazy for it! I place about 20 cocktail rye slices on a pan and then put them in the oven, plain, making sure that it is a little toasted so when I apply the sauce, it doesn’t completely sink in. Once they’ve been in the oven for 3-5 mins, I apply my toppings — keeping all the slices together to mitigate the mess on the pan. (I eyeball everything). I apply the sauce, then all my toppings. I usually do sausage and pepperoni and then sometimes onions or some other veggies. I make different sections with different toppings. Then, place back in the oven and let it back until cheese is melted. Voila! It’s an easy treat and the crowd will go wild over it.

Onion Garlic Peel Apart Bread
- Sourdough bread loaf, unsliced
- 1/2 cup butter melted
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped or minced
- 1/2 cup green onions chopped
- 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley, divided
- A pinch of salt
- 1 cup cheddar cheese
-
1 cup fresh shredded Mozzarella Cheese
Preheat oven to 350˚. Cut a criss cross pattern throughout the top of the bread. Combine melted butter, garlic, onions, parsley and salt together in bowl and pour over criss crossed bread. Top with both cheeses. Wrap loosely in foil and bake for 15 mins. Uncover bread and then put back in the oven until cheese is bubbly and slightly golden.

Bacon Wrapped Smokies
- package of little smokies
- 1lb of bacon
- 1-2 C. brown sugar
- toothpicks
Preheat over to 425˚. Layer brown sugar on the bottom of pan, making sure all is covered (you can use your discretion on how much to use). Next, open bacon and once bacon package opened, cut bacon in thirds. Wrap each weenie in one third of bacon slice. Then, secure it with a toothpick. Put bacon covered weenie in brown sugar layered pan and tilt toothpick back. Once you have all your weenies in the pan, put in oven for 10 mins. Tilt toothpick the other way, as you want all bacon cooked all the way around. Put back in oven for additional 10 mins. Then, take out and put on a serving dish and let them cool. These will be extra syrupy from the brown sugar but your guests will not be disappointed.
Hopefully these recipes will help give you ideas for what to take to your Friendsgiving, holiday party, Christmas, etc! Enjoy!
