Dirty Hair- Don't Care

Dirty hair, don’t care.

When I was little, I'd wake up every morning and my mom would wash and style my hair. We’d start by washing my hair in the sink, then she’d blow dry it, and curl it. I had a pixie with mall bangs. Hey, it was the 80’s. My head looked 35 while my body looked 10, it was great, let me tell ya! (yes, I’m thankful she did my hair, I was a brat)

Up until six months ago, I couldn’t stand for my hair to be dirty. I would get up and shampoo it, blow dry, and style it, e v e r y d a y... until l began working from home again, now I just look like a hobo five out of the seven days of the week because I don’t see anyone. But then came this ingenious idea that I didn’t really need to shampoo my hair everyday, all because of my sweet friend, Britt.

Britt and I have similar hair. We both have very fine hair, but we have a lot of it. Hers is just longer than mine, so I often joke about giving her a bob or short baby bangs. Only so my hair can look cooler and longer than hers. Noooo, I wouldn’t really do that. Britt, and her hubby Sam, were some of the first people that I met, upon moving to Nashville and I adore them so much, so pretty much everything that they tell me to do, I’ll do it.

Well, Britt and I got to talking one day when I was cutting her hair and she was telling me that she can go like five-ish days without shampooing and I was seriously amazed! Remember, we have almost the same type of hair and never have I ever, felt like I could go more than 24 hours with unwashed hair. So I began trying things out, because if it works for Britt, it’s gotta work for me.

Here are the things that I found out that work for me, so if you want to try dirty hair, then...TRY IT.

Day 1:

Step 1- Let your hair air dry- many of us don’t have time for this, but trust me, if you throw some smoothing product in it and let it air dry, it will dry at the most volume ever. (duh, because it’s frizzy, right? RIGHT!) If you don’t have time to do this in the morning, do it the night before. Part it where it normally goes so it doesn’t feel weird when it’s dry.

Step 2- Once your hair is completely dried, section it off and begin to curl or flat iron it.

Step 3- Don’t take your curling iron or flat iron all the way to the roots. This will leave more volume at the roots. Yes, it will be tricky if you’re trying to get it stick straight. I curl my hair, so it’s a little bit easier for me to do this.

Step 4- Once you’re finished with flat ironing/ curling, take some texture spray and spray it directly on your part and work it in. I do this only to add extra volume. Then do the same thing on the ends of your hair, piecing it out. You’re good to go!

Step 5- When you’re ready for bed, put it in an ouchless Scuncii hair tie. I put mine on the top of my head and go to sleep, then I’m not attacked with it, throughout the night

Day 2:

Step 1- When you’re getting ready, pull your hair down from your pony tail. Comb it out from roots to ends using a big comb.

Step 2- Like you sprayed in the texture spray on the first day, now do this with dry shampoo. I spray my part first, then all around my hairline, so it doesn’t look greasy.

Step 3- I flat iron or curl what I need to, so I look presentable.

Step 4- Tease the crown where it’s a little flat from my pony tail the night before. Step 5- Repeat all steps from Day 2. Voila!

Many people will ask me, what products are best? I stick with a cream base with some sort of frizz reduction or smoother. I apply when my hair is wet. This will also give your hair texture to help hold curl while making it less soft, thus making it less greasy.

Right now I’m alternating between the Paul Mitchell Neon Sugar Cream OR Amika Haute Mess Texture Gel, when my hair is towel dried and combed. Both of these products smell great. The Neon Sugar Cream defines more of my natural curl and gives me more of a sticky hold, which I love.

When my hair is dry, I’m also using Amika Undone Texture Spray and Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo. These two products are also outstanding. Most dry shampoos don’t last long for me, and I’ve had this one for awhile, so it’s really withheld its value.

I hope that the next time you wake up and you’re tired, you’ll try my tricks and you’ll still feel great about your hair! I love it because the older I get, the less time I want to spend styling my hair. Happy Styling!

*DISCLAIMER* - I do NOT get five days out of my hair. I will only let my hair get to three days and I shampoo on the fourth. As much as I would love to try, I get to a point, where I want to scrub my noggin again and have fresh hair. :)

Great tips! I do not have the time or patience to wash my hair daily😊. The more time between the washes, the better.
Thanks for sharing.
